Getting Lucky
My story is a lucky story! It's about luck that I created. I have learned that Life happens! And it can be tough at times. Yet we CAN turn our challenges into fertilizer and make good out of something that appears bad.
My parents loved me but I always knew being the 6th girl born with no boys so far in the family, that there was understandable disappointment around my arrival. This message was clearer to me when not long after my birth they adopted a boy. There was also a question around my survival which meant my birth and the first year of life was full of anxiety. Having lost 2 babies previously to the same suspected condition my parents were already emotionally exhausted from life at the tender ages of 26 and 27. Many other unlucky circumstances followed including my mother being frequently ill.
As I grew to become a teenager we loved and laughed a lot. Yet I still found the strain of my life quite unbearable at times. By the time I was 16 years of age I was not feeling very lucky. My mother and I used to regularly enjoy a the word game called 'Scrabble' even though she always beat me. She was a walking encyclopedia, except she didn't walk. From the time I was 16 for 25 physically agonizing years she was virtually bedridden.
Later having started my own family I was feeling extremely lucky. Looking down at our new baby girl I was absolutely transfixed by her big dark eyes, her perfect little rosebud mouth.
Though only 16 months old our oldest daughter looked like a giant next to her new sister. A mass of wild curls was bobbing along the bottom of the window near my hospital bed the day after my second daughter's birth. Into full view taking enthusiastic, tiny toddler steps our 16 month old entered the room. She didn't care that her socks were pulled up over the outside of her pants, or that the top she had found for her dad to put on her was in fact a pyjama top (and you might be aware by now that her father was definitely not concerned) When I introduced this little girl to her gorgeous new baby sister she just fell in love along with us. Ooohhh family bliss.
6 months later I found myself crawling across the floor unable to support myself. The pain in my legs unbearable, the fogginess in my head debilitating from getting up on average 8 times a night to a distressed baby and the depression in my heart as thick as the walls of a fortress. Have you ever felt like that? The total let down of a dream. Great expectations shattered! It stinks doesn't it.
Though those days were dark my gorgeous girls could lift my spirits for an instant with the light in their eyes and their giggles. Sharing regular laughs with friends who were busy with their own growing families also saved my sanity and maybe my life.
A defining moment
What was your first wake up call? Maybe for some of you this book is it! When did you first wake up to realize that there are other ways than the usual ways of living, that sometimes in life the usual ways can be not only bad for you but even downright dangerous.
Well half way to my patient little girl who was lying waiting for her nappy change, I reflected on the not so joyful message that yet another doctor had given me just the day before. "You will never get better it will just get worse. Learn to live with it". With my immune system breaking down, feeling like I was allergic to the 20th century and suffering from chronic fatigue my life was full of anti's. There was anti this and anti that with anti inflammatories, antibiotics, antidepressants and a big bag of anti anti fun. What happened to the dream?
Luck is a choice
Luck and happiness is a choice but we are not taught that. We are especially not taught how to create luck. Every thing is by chance discovery. Some people never make those discoveries. Maybe you have 'hit the wall of life' and survived to be here today reading this.
What are your dreams? Did you get the fairytale or were you taught not to listen to fairytales? Do you feel like jumping out of bed in the morning and saying "Thank you god its morning" or do you fall out of bed and groan "Oh good god its morning"
Well on this particular day in the middle of the family room floor I had a defining LIGHT BULB moment! A voice in me said "I have choice"! I meant to exercise my right to choose!
To choose what?
To choose to be lucky because I wasn't feeling too lucky up to that point in fact I was not a winner in life I was more of a hmmmmm whinger!
I didn't yet know how but I set out on a quest to discover how I could overcome this physical and emotional breakdown. I decided that I would accept this diagnosis only after I had exhausted all other possibilities and after soon discovering how much there was out there for me to explore I realized I could not live long enough to do that anyway. The adventure motivated me to grow in ways I would never of bothered to without this challenge.
Luck requires action
To create luck we need to take action. Not just any action but selecting specific actions that involve mind, body and emotions. We CAN create shifts and possibilities that we thought we could only dream about.
The action I took involved a long road to listen to my inner voice and try out as many possibilities as I could. First I needed to heal my body but soon I realized this was directly related to my emotional baggage which also needed support.
Responsibility on a day-to-day basis for my health, relationships, actions, reactions and non-actions put me on the path to health and happiness. In addition to this allowing others to take responsibility in the same way for their own body, mind and emotional life freed up my energy so I could pursue my own greater potential.
Students and clients of mine have reported amazing shifts in their lives. Happier relationships have abounded with partners, children and family of origin but most of all with THEMSELVES. You can do it to! The essential element is the 'you' part. One of my favorite sayings that has become a mantra for me over the years "If it is to be it's up to me".
